Heath Shoup

Vice President of Sales and Product Management, Planning, and Logistics, West Pak Avocado

Time at West Pak Avocado: 21 years

What Your Role Is Really Like

“It’s like being a Jack of all trades. I sell avocados daily and handle customers across the United States, which helps keep me grounded on what the market and the industry are doing. When I describe my daily work, it’s helping to be the glue that keeps the company together. I’m connecting the planning team with supply chain and the supply chain team with sales. I get to troubleshoot, help the team learn, and guide them toward what would be the most successful for the customer and the company. It’s all about helping each individual learn and grow.”

How Sales Becomes A Life Lesson

“Working in sales puts you out there in front of people; it takes you out of your comfort zone. My wife laughs because I can be practically anywhere, pick somebody, and start a conversation. By the end of the night, we’re exchanging contacts. I’ve never been really comfortable doing it, but I keep practicing because it’s connection and networking. Being able to communicate and not be afraid to talk about something or address a problem with a customer only helps you communicate in other aspects of your life. In sales, you have to be able to communicate, and you can hone those skills at work, at home, and with friends and family.”

A Mentor Mentored: Those Who Have Shaped Heath

• Randy Shoup, Co-Owner, West Pak Avocado – “My dad is highly respected in the industry, and the way he has always conducted himself is an image I want to portray. Early on, he set the groundwork and base for how I should be in life.”

• Joel Garfinkle, Executive Coach, Garfinkle Executive Coaching – “He’s taken the things I’ve learned from my dad and given me guidance on how to amplify them.”

• Mario Pacheco, Chief Executive Officer, West Pak Avocado – “Mario has given me a different view of how to run a business.”

Words of Wisdom for the Next Generation

“If you’re going to try anything, put your full effort into it. I didn’t just come in and get to where I am today. I’ve had to put blood, sweat, and tears into this role and learn every aspect, and I’m still learning. In the early stages of any role, you will learn the job. Then, you will apply that and grow into other positions that make you more of an asset to a company. Be dedicated to it and give it your all. It won’t be all roses and butterflies at the beginning, but you’ve got to find something you like and invest in it. Establish a good work-life balance and take care of yourself. With the stress of the everyday job, you have to have something that will take your mind off of things and help you relax.”
