The humble radish has stood in the back, quietly supporting others, long enough. With a signature “hot” flavor all its own, the ability to bring fluorescent-level color to its company, and unique versatility, we are ready to see this radiant root shine.
I did grow up with a healthy amount of radishes thanks to eating a lot of Mexican food. On tacos, in pozole, and—yes—on salad, it’s easy for me to forget this veggie’s sweet spice isn’t necessarily considered integral to all menus. But, now, I have expanded my radish horizons beyond the plate and the bowl to my treasured sipping glass.
I was recently introduced to the Spicy Sunshine Spritz, a delectable libation that lets the radish do what it does best alongside a complementary lineup of cucumbers, Aperol, simple syrup, and gin. This beverage makes me think of winter traditions chasing the cold away by having too much fun to care. Adding a flair I am now convinced only the radish can bring to a beverage, I’m setting aside the peppermint in the task of libation kick.
You could say I’m seeing red.
