Libations For All Occasions: Ginger in the Rough

Libations For All Occasions: Ginger in the Rough

For those who know me well, ginger beer hits all the high notes. The spice cleanses my throat and palate while invigorating my senses—all without overpowering or oversaturating the experience.

And, honestly, for me, it goes with everything from a bouillabaisse or ice cream to a fresh green salad—heavy on the arugula, please. As a standard, it enhances and is enhanced by citrus of all types, but for this lucky number, we are going with Blood orange juice (sparkling if you like) and grapefruit as the showstoppers.

This libation is great after a run or a long night of laughing with friends to soothe a weary but satisfied soul. There is a time and place for a spiked beverage, but for me, I like it as is. In my heyday, I definitely would have taken it up a notch with a smoky Mezcal or gold tequila.

However you choose to partake, I hope you enjoy this simple drink—rough around the edges in some cases, but elegant in others.

Cheers, my friends!

Here's how to make it...

Ingredients

6–8 oz ginger beer, the spicier the better (and depending on your glass size)

2 oz fresh-squeezed Blood orange juice, or a sparkling Blood orange beverage

2–4 grapefruit rounds
(1 for garnish, others for the drink)

1 sprig of Rosemary,
glass-high

Splash of bitters
(for a little edge)

Highball or Collins glass

Ice, size, shape, and volume of your choosing

Prep Time: 2 mins

Servings: 1

directions

1. Fill half the glass with ice and pour in ginger beer, followed by Blood orange juice and a squeeze from a grapefruit wedge or two. For more depth, add a splash of bitters, and mix in grapefruit rounds.

2. Once your drink is assembled, add in the sprig of rosemary and use it to mix the drink as you consume. Garnish with another grapefruit round and call it a day.

3. For those looking to indulge, 1–2 oz of Mezcal will add a smoky heat and a warm belly.
