Industry Spotlight: Organic Farming: A Full-Time Job

Consumers are increasingly seeking out safe, nutritious, and environmentally conscious products. For over two decades, Rainier Fruit Company has recognized and met this growing demand with a robust organics program. Thanks to careful tinkering from farm to shelf, the company is going on its seventh season supplying Washington-grown organic apples year-round.

1. An Organic History

While all United States agricultural producers must adhere to a plethora of standards regardless of growing method, organic certification requires additional rules across the operation. Put simply, organic farming represents the intersection of modern agriculture and respect for the land. In its decades of growing organically, Rainier Fruit has expanded aspects of the methodology into all of its orchards as part of its commitment to responsible production.

2. Organic In Practice

The foundation of organic agriculture is built on farming conscientiously. For Rainier Fruit, this means bolstering plant health to strengthen natural defenses against pests and disease. Teams trained in entomology—the study of insects—monitor levels of pests in the field and manage on a block-by-block basis, often using non-chemical solutions. Fostering biodiversity above and below the soil harmonizes plantings and surrounding life.

3. Meeting Demand

For many consumers, purchasing organic products has become an aspect of personal identity, creating a need for consistent supply and selection. According to the Organic Trade Association, organic food sales in the United States reached $63.8 billion in 2023. In line with this growth, Rainier Fruit has certified thousands of orchard acres to keep shelves stocked with tasty organic fruit 24/7. This year is no exception—summer of 2024 will mark Rainier’s seventh year straight shipping high-flavor organic apples year-round.
